1982 Lancia Rally 037 Stradale
- The very first of 217 Lancia Rally 037
- VIN: ZLA151R00000001
- Restored with as many original parts as possible
The Lancia Rally 037 Stradale was developed to homologate the FIA Group B rally car. It’s a famous and popular car that was in charge of continuing Lancia’s rally legacy following the legendary Stratos.
It’s commonly known as the 037 however the official name is just Lancia Rally. 037 comes from SE037, the project name from when it was in development with Abarth. The base was the Lancia Beta Montecarlo and it was originally going to be called the Lancia Abarth Rally but “Abarth” was dropped to give more emphasis on Lancia.
It uses tubular subframes at the front to which the engine and suspension are attached and it was designed by Gian Paolo Dallara.
The longitudinally mid-mounted engine is a supercharged DOHC inline-4 that produces 205hp, plenty for a car that weighs just 1,170kg.
Only a total of 217 of both the Stradale and Competizione 037s were produced, making this a rare and sought after collector’s car. Incredibly, this car’s VIN is ZLA151R00000001, meaning it’s the very first one produced, cars number 2 and 3 are recorded as having been used for crash tests which only adds to the value of this car.
It was purchased in 1999 at a Lancia dealer called Autopool Prete in Alessandria, a city in the south of Piedmont, Italy. It had not been driven for at least 10 years and required a full mechanical overhaul, including the engine. The Rosso Corsa Pininfarina bodywork was covered in a thick layer of dust. It was then sent to Japan in this condition and over the following 18 years it was restored by Japanese specialists using as many original parts as possible, including genuine Fiat parts for the engine internals. The restoration was completed in June of 2019, the odometer shows 544km, there are no records from before so it’s difficult to determine the exact mileage, but when the exterior and interior have been finished so carefully it doesn’t really matter.
