1987 TOYOTA COROLLA LEVIN (AE86) GT-APEX
- The poster car for the popular Toyota FR Sports
- Original paint
- Changed to SOLEX 40 caliber carburetor
Toyota AE86, was produced from May 1983 to May of 1987. Combined with the Sprinter Trueno and Corolla Levin, they were nicknamed “Hachi-Roku”. At the time they were released, the Japanese makers were in pursuit of innovativeness and convenience, installing new mechanisms such as turbos and front wheel drive. AE86 was developed with an emphasis on a non-turbo (NA) 1.6-liter engine with rear wheel drive. By making it into a 4-valve twin-cam engine, the 4A-GEU engine’s response was much improved. With 130ps/6600rpm and 15.2kg-m/5200rpm, it had enough engine performance, and was perceived well by tuning enthusiasts.
This example is a 1987 Corolla Levin “AE86” GT-APEX. GT-APEX was considered its highest grade of its lineup, thus power steering, power window came standard. Dressed in the black and white “Panda-coloring”, the steps are in good condition maintaining the original paint, void of rust and deterioration.
The interior has been kept mostly in its original condition except the steering wheel, which was changed to the popular NARDI steering. The air conditioning works perfectly.
The original engine was fuel injected but exchanged with a SOLEX 40 caliber carburetor, attaining certification. Fitted with Toda Racing’s high lift camshaft/strengthened valve spring, and replaced with an exhaust manifold and muffler. With a TEIN ride-height adjustable coilover for its suspension, CUSCO LSD for the differential, a strut bar, and Watanabe aluminum wheel, by revving up the engine higher, you can further enjoy the feeling the engine reaching its potential. Through the modification it has gone through, the feeling of completely letting-it-go can be attained, a feeling injection-fueled engine lacks.
