1974 FORD ESCORT Mk.1 ESTATE
- First-generation ESCORTs are popular for their success in rallying
- Portuguese production model
- Exterior, interior, and engine system all In very good condition
Escorts for small mass cars were produced by Ford's European division (commonly known as Europe Ford) from 1967 to 2002. This newly exhibited example is the first generation (Mk.1) two-door estate model sold from 1968 to 1974. The model year for this example is 1974, the final year that Mk.1s were produced.
The first Escort Mk.1 was announced in England at the end of 1967. The drive system is FR, which is equipped with an in-line 4-cylinder engine (1100cc and 1300cc lineup) called "Kent Unit" and equipped with rack-and-pinion type steering.
Initially, the Escort Mk.1 was produced only in the UK, but from 1970, Ford expanded its production to Germany as well. Furthermore, a production line was established in Portugal, and there is even a production model from the line in Lisbon as the final model of the Mk.1. This particular example is a Portuguese production model, and the production plate attached to the engine bay and the license plate left at the top of the front bumper proves this fact.
Many people associate the image of the Ford Escort to a rally car. Mk.1 won the London to Mexico World Cup Rally in 1970 and many other rallies, thus, successfully established the “Rally Ford” image and impression in the European market.
This example is a very rare 2-door estate model. The styling of the rear section drawn with the coke bottle line that was popular at the time truly gives off a sophisticated impression even today. In addition, it is a “shooting break” on several classes that distinguishes it from the image of the estate (wagon) at the time.
It was imported into Japan about three years ago by one of the leading individuals of the so-called "Super Ford" such as the Cobra and Pantera, and before that, it received a meticulous restoration by a Dutch specialist. Everything from the maroon paint, plated parts, and interior, are all in very good condition, and the 1100cc Kent Unit has also been maintained well. Driving with a 4-speed MT is never fast, but it still has a compact and lightweight body and maintains the goodness of being a “brother” of a famous rally car, thus, gives off a fun driving experience even until this day.
It is said that there is only one Escort Mk.1 2-door estate model here in Japan. This example is one of the recommended machines that can also withstand your everyday daily needs.
