Bearing the name “Cosmo,” derived from the word for “universe,” the Cosmo Sport was the world’s first production automobile equipped with a twin-rotor rotary engine. Following the unveiling of its prototype at the 1963 Tokyo Motor Show (then known as the All Japan Motor Show), the model underwent more than 3 million kilometers of development and endurance testing, including sustained high-speed trials, before finally entering production in May 1967.
This particular example is a later 128 ps model. The previous owner acquired it as a one-owner car and, together with his brother, carefully preserved it for approximately 26 years. Building upon that well-documented foundation, the current owner commissioned a comprehensive full restoration.
The process began with meticulous stripping of the body to bare metal, followed by repainting in the original factory color. The engine bay, trunk compartment, floor panels, and undercarriage were restored with equal thoroughness. The interior was completely refurbished, including reupholstered seats, a renewed headliner, and attention even to the speaker board. The engine and transmission were overhauled by a specialist of the Cosmo Sport. Brightwork such as the bumpers was re-plated, weatherstripping replaced, and every effort made to return the car as closely as possible to new condition.
Since completion of the restoration, the car has been kept indoors and has not been driven, remaining in near-static display condition. Nonetheless, inspections (shaken) have been taken when due, and engine oil and consumables replaced accordingly, ensuring its mechanical integrity is preserved.
Dozens of copied service records documenting more than two decades of maintenance under the previous owners remain on file, supporting that the approximately 20,000 km indicated is genuine mileage. In addition, a detailed restoration book compiled during the current ownership accompanies the car.
A Cosmo Sport presented at this level - documented, fully restored, and preserved with such care - represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of Mazda’s most historically significant creations in its finest form.
