Despite being an automotive powerhouse, the United States has often been overlooked when considering sports cars. The Chevrolet Corvette stands as the only sports model continuously produced for over 60 years. Its classic OHV engine with a large displacement and distinctive styling, which differs from European sports cars for its aggressive style, has captivated many hearts. This particular example is a 1961 first-generation Corvette, known as the "C1".

The first-generation C1 Corvette debuted in 1953 as a two-seater open-top model inspired by European sports cars. Its fibreglass body was a pioneering innovation in mass-produced cars but received negative reviews due to inconsistent quality control. Despite these initial setbacks, the Corvette still gained high popularity, as open-top cars were considered a status symbol and the C1 resonated with buyers.

The first minor update introduced a 283ci V8 engine to the lineup. By 1958, the Corvette adopted a quad headlight style for the first time, similar to other Chevrolet models, and redesigned the grille area with extensive use of chrome. This update emphasised both the car's American character and Corvette's originality. Starting in 1961, the rear design was revamped with the "ducktail" style, which would be carried over to the C2 generation. This example is from this 1961 lineup.

The later models of the C1 Corvette, specifically those from 1958 onwards, are particularly popular among enthusiasts. The rich, elegant styling, accentuated by the liberal use of chrome, has become an iconic representation of 1950s America. While the mechanical aspects and driving experience might fall short by sports car standards, it still holds a special, unique appeal in various aspects that sets it apart from other models.

This example is a restored C1 Corvette. The original 1961 C1 Corvette was equipped with a 4.6-liter V8 engine, but this piece has been upgraded to a 5.7-liter V8 engine.

Moreover, the lowered ride height and American Racing wheels give it a more refined appearance compared to the original. The brakes have been upgraded to high-performance Wilwood brakes, a renowned American brake manufacturer. The interior has been upgraded with all new gauges, steering wheel, shift lever, and seats, in addition to modern conveniences such as the navigation system and a Japanese electronic toll collection device.

Unfortunately, there are no records of the restoration process or maintenance history, and the documentation is limited to a “Cancellation of the Registration” certificate, proof that the car was once registered in Japan. However, the C1 remains an immensely popular model not only for restorations adhering to the original specifications but also as potential for high-tech conversions, which are common in the hot rod scene. Given its well-maintained condition, this particular example is certainly worth considering.
