CITY CIRCUIT TOKYO BAY AUCTION

1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale

  • Special Sprint Speciale model
  • Imported to Japan by Giron Motors

The Giulia was one of Alfa Romeo’s earliest mass-production cars and was the successor of the Giulietta.

With the Giulietta being the diminutive/younger Giulia, the Giulia was marketed as a more grown-up car. There were four different versions, the 4-door Berlina, the 2-door coupe Sprint, the convertible Spider, and the Sprint Speciale (SS). Both the Spider and SS did not change much from the Giulietta era however a major change was the engine, with displacement increasing from 1.3 to 1.6-litres meaning power reached 112 hp.

The Bertone design of the SS was very modern and aerodynamic, taking design cues from the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 "Disco Volante" and having a drag coefficient value of just 0.28, allowing it to reach a top speed of over 200 km/h.

Despite the amazing performance, the SS was more of a GT and the Giulia TZ was Alfa Romeo’s variant used for racing. The interior is luxurious with leather upholstery and the suspension is soft, ideal for long-distance cruising.

This example was imported to Japan in 1988 and its Rosso Alfa exterior matches the brown interior beautifully.
Although the actual mileage is unknown due to the lack of record books, the indicated 29,578 km feels accurate due to its stunning condition and makes it hard to believe this is a 60-year-old car.
