1986 BMW M 635CSi
- Race-bred hand-bent, equal length exhaust manifold and muffler end
- This M 635CSi is from 1986, the last year of the early to mid model, when it had the nickname “iron bumper”
- Very rare solid black (BMW SCHWARZ) body color
The only BMW super car, M1 is known for its unfortunate fate as a racing car. The legendary model with a mid-engine dry sump unit “M88/1” modified to a wet sump version and the DOHC to SOHC.
An injection was added to the 6 throttle valve but fitted at a 30 degree angle, the E24 first generation 6 series encased in the flowing lines of the front hood is the M635CSi. The engine type is “M88 /3”.
In Japan, the consensus is that the best E24 among the first generation 6 series is the “M6” but that is not true. The M6 was produced due to rigid exhaust gas regulations of North America and Japan, when E24 was going through its third minor change in 1987. A detuned version of the M88 /3, the S38 unit, was equipped on this example. Also everything from the hand-bent, equal length exhaust manifold and muffler end, were race-bred for the M88 /3, compared to this the S38 had a cast iron exhaust manifold and muffler with catalyst installed like a normal 635. For this reason, M88/3 boasted a 286ps / 35kgm compared to S387 only capable of 260ps / 34kgm.
Not only that, the exhaust sound is said to be completely different. If you are looking for the truly silky and powerful “M sound” with an E24, the BMW fanatics will tell you to choose the European spec with the “M” badge the M 635CSi, not the “M6”.
This example, the M 635CSi is from 1986, the last year of the early to mid model, when it had the nickname “iron bumper”. It was parallel imported to Japan brand new and registered in July, 1986. Showing only 58460km with interior/exterior, it is still in great condition. What stands out is the solid black (BMW SCHWARZ) body color, which is very rare for a E24. This is a chance to get a hand on the E24 in superb condition which had various success in the Group A tour.
