Unveiled in 1998 to mark the 50th anniversary of Honda Motor Co., and launched for sale in 1999, the S2000 quickly became a landmark model. Power comes from the F20C 2.0L inline-four DOHC VTEC engine, delivering 250 ps and an impressive 125 ps per liter in naturally aspirated form. Its 9,000 rpm redline, remarkable for a production car, delivered a distinctly high-revving character often compared to that of an F1 engine. Even today, the S2000 is recognized as a pure sports car with a lasting legacy.
This example is an early, base-grade model from the time of the car’s original release. The exterior is finished in Silverstone Metallic, a restrained and timeless color. Inside it features the factory-optional bright red leather seats, adding a vivid contrast to the exterior. This car was not equipped with the optional navigation system, giving the dashboard a clean and uncluttered layout that highlights the S2000’s original driver-focused design, centered on simplicity and function.
Most notable is the odometer reading of just 1,092 km, an exceptionally low figure that comes with its own story.
The first owner, who purchased the car new, sadly passed away soon afterward. As a result, the vehicle remained stored in a barn for many years. About five years ago, it was passed on to the current owner. Recognizing the car’s extremely low mileage and original condition, the owner hesitated to add distance by driving it. As a result, very little additional mileage has been accumulated, and the car has effectively preserved much of its near-new condition into the present day.
At the same time, this is not simply a car left idle. Under the current owner, the engine has been started weekly and the car has received regular inspections. All maintenance records since the current ownership are on file. The vinyl rear window, characteristic of pre-2001 models, shows some age-related clouding. However, this is part of its originality and has been intentionally retained, as the owner favored open-air driving and did not prioritize replacement.
Though engineered for serious performance, this S2000’s rarity can make one think twice about using its full potential. Whether to explore the 9,000 rpm range or to preserve it as a piece of automotive history is a decision left to its next owner.
