1972 Nissan Laurel SGX [C130]

  • Early manual transmission model of "SGX"
  • L20 inline-six with SU twin carburetors
  • Includes vehicle inspection sticker
  • Front and rear adjustable suspension & Ronchamp XR-4 wheels

The second-generation Laurel, known as the C130 series, was sold from 1972. This example is a 2-door hardtop, which is often referred to as “butaketsu”, which literally translates to pig’s butt. There are two main body types - the 2-door hardtop and the 4-door sedan. The "butaketsu" nickname refers specifically to the 2-door hardtop, while the 4-door sedan is known as "Gamera,” a fictional monster similar to Godzilla, due to its front design resembling the giant.
The C130 Laurel is characterized by its prominently flared rear fenders and the design of the rear trunk area, which has an increased surface area due to the tail lights being embedded in the bumper, giving it a voluminous look, hence the name "butaketsu."
The catchy phrase used during its new car sales was "Let’s drive slowly, Laurel." Positioned between the Skyline and Cedric/Gloria in terms of class, the Laurel is considered a middle-class luxury model, in contrast to the performance-oriented Skyline.
This particular unit is the "SGX" grade, known for its sporty attributes. A defining feature of the "SGX" grade is the inclusion of SU twin carburetors. Compared to other grades with smaller single carburetors, this variant provides an additional 10 horsepower from the same 2000cc engine.
The exterior is painted in deep green, which beautifully highlights the press lines when light hits. Although this is an early model, the tail lights have been changed to the later version. The front and rear adjustable suspension, along with the Ronchamp XR-4 wheels, enhance its classic appeal. A vehicle inspection sticker from that era adds to its charm.
The interior shows some age, with cracks in the dashboard and wear on the door panels, but otherwise remain in good condition.
Many "butaketsu" Laurels were unfortunately worn out during the heyday of street racing, making existing examples quite rare. Among them, the popular "SGX" grade in well-maintained condition holds significant value.
