1975 BMW 2002 Turbo
- One of 1,672 units produced
- The icon that established BMW’s sporting legacy
- Records of the restoration process are available
In 1973, the BMW 2002 Turbo became the first European production car to feature a turbocharger. Utilizing technology developed for aircraft engines, the 2002 Turbo adopted the KKK-made turbocharger paired with a 1.9L inline-4 SOHC engine, producing a maximum output of 170 horsepower. This performance was equivalent to the 3.0 CS, which had a 1,000cc larger displacement, and the car boasted a top speed of 211 km/h, making it a high-performance machine with specs similar to a racing car.
However, due to the First Oil Crisis at the time, the 2002 Turbo did not achieve the fuel efficiency that might have been expected, leading to the production being limited to just 1,672 units before it was discontinued.
The exterior design of the car includes features such as special overfenders and a bumperless front air dam, giving it a more aggressive, sporty look. This car became an iconic symbol of BMW’s sporty image and remains highly popular to this day.
The current owner is one of those who were captivated by the 2002 Turbo. In the late 1970s, the owner, who was driving his older brother’s Kenmeri Skyline, became fascinated with German cars after riding alongside a friend who had purchased a 2002 tii. The high build quality of the 2002 impressed him, and he became a fan of German automobiles. Fast forward to the 1990s, the owner acquired the 2002 Turbo, the pinnacle of the 2002 series, as his own car.
However, the relationship between the owner and the car was not long-lasting. Despite his best efforts to maintain the car in optimal condition, the owner was unable to find a mechanic capable of perfectly tuning the Kugelfischer fuel injection system, which led to him selling the car.
Years later, the owner was able to reacquire a 1975 5-speed manual 2002 Turbo with the first registration on the car's title being from 1975. It is believed that this car is a parallel import, indicated by the fact that it does not have the usual fender bolts filled with putty and lacks the fender mirrors.
The owner originally intended to have the restoration performed by BMW headquarters but was told that it couldn’t be done to his exacting standards. As a result, the owner turned to COX, a company with a wealth of experience in racing and restoration, and had the Kugelfischer fuel injection system overhauled. The results were excellent, and the owner was finally able to enjoy the car in the near-perfect condition he had always desired.
With numerous service records and restoration photos left by previous owners, this 2002 Turbo is regarded as one of the finest examples of the model. The owner, a car collector, calls it the "best 02 Turbo" and has maintained it in exceptional condition, making it a rare and valuable piece.
