2003 mono craft GT-300 [Toyota MR-S]

  • Equipped with a GT wing and aero bonnet

The MR-S, which debuted in 1999 as the successor to the MR2, Japan's first mass-produced midship car released in 1984, was in production until 2007. Compared to the explosive success of the MR2, the production numbers of the MR-S were not very high, but it still garnered enthusiastic fans both domestically and internationally due to its unique lightweight open-top MR (midship rear-wheel drive) layout.

The mono craft GT-300 is a custom car designed by Autobacs’ original custom brand and was built to capture the spirit of the All Japan GT Championship. It is based on the MR-S and crafted to embody the excitement of the GT racing scene.

In 1999, the MR-S was chosen to succeed the MR2 in the All Japan GT Championship, following the MR2’s back-to-back victories in 1998 and 1999. TRD (Toyota Racing Development) led the design and engine development, while APEXi Racing (now apr) was responsible for the car’s construction. The MR-S debuted in 2000 and, despite the limited development time, managed to achieve one win. By 2002, the ARTA Apex MR-S, driven by Masao Nitta and Shinichi Takagi, won the overall championship, and further championships were secured in 2005 and 2007.

Although compact in size, the MR-S was 50mm longer in wheelbase than the MR2, which proved advantageous in racing. The mono craft GT-300 was created to allow more people to experience the thrill of the championship-winning car, with TRD’s expertise incorporated into its development.

With feedback from the racing scene, this model was designed to be a highly stimulating package, as reflected in its catalog, which proclaimed, "The envy of GT machines dominates the streets." Its body features striking details like the bulging front fenders and rear intake cuts, making it look almost like a racing car. The body width was expanded to 1,790mm (certified vehicle width), and the side skirts were designed with aerodynamics in mind, giving it the appearance of a true GT machine.

Additionally, the car can be equipped with optional Weds Sports GT-Wing and Weds Sports AERO BONNET to complete the GT machine look.

This particular car comes equipped with both the GT-Wing and Aero Bonnet, making it resemble a full GT racing car. For vehicle inspection purposes, the current owner has also prepared the original bonnet and engine hood, which are included with the car.

The mono craft GT-300 is available in two versions, Ver.1 and Ver.2. This car is a Ver.1 model, and it features the TRD emblem engraved on the rear bumper, a characteristic of this version.

In the engine room, an APEXi AX turbo is installed, and while the car originally had a Kakimoto Racing exhaust, it has been replaced with a Fujitsubo certified exhaust system for vehicle inspection compliance.

Originally, this car was used as a demo car by Autobacs Toyama, and it comes with a wealth of documents, indicating the careful handling and history of the car.

This car is one of only 100 limited edition sets, which included both the complete car and the body kit. Though branded as mono craft, it bears the rare double name of Autobacs and TRD, a package that is difficult to find today.
