The Chevrolet Sportscoach is a striking vehicle due to its size. It is a full-size motorhome with an overall length of 8 metres and it has all the comforts of a home.
Sportscoach was a coachbuilder specialising in campervans since 1968 and was acquired by Coachman in 1978, but the flagship Sportscoach model was still manufactured under the Sportscoach brand name. This is a rare example that was manufactured before the takeover.
The Sportscoach featured an innovative design that set it apart from other motorhomes of the time. At the time, other manufacturers' motorhomes used wooden construction techniques in their body designs, and it was not uncommon for wooden frames to be used.
In comparison, the Sportscoach used manufacturing techniques used in aircraft to create a lightweight and strong body. The frame was often made of aluminium and other metals, and their marketing emphasised its durability. The distinctive protruding nose was designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, another feature taken from aircraft technology. The use of polyurethane in the walls was also innovative at the time, and it improved insulation.
The interior of this particular car was extensively redesigned by the previous owner and is equipped with modern comforts. In addition to an external generator, the car is equipped with a large and practical kitchen sink, a fridge, microwave oven and it even has a Japanese standard power outlet. Of course, it also has air-conditioning.
There are two large sofas that convert to full-flat beds, and a bed can be made out of a shelf above the living space. There is plenty of space, and up to six people can be accommodated comfortably. However, the toilet has not yet been restored and the drainage pipes have been removed,it would need to be rebuilt with a tank.
Parts for the Chevrolet engine are relatively easy to obtain but its size means that it requires a skillful driver to drive it in Japan. Nonetheless the car's extensive equipment and space make it comfortable to drive, and the fact that it is a rare example manufactured by Sportcoach makes it a special vehicle.
