1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS [Type 964]

  • Imported to Japan by Mizwa, the sole official importer at the time
  • 6-speed manual conversion
  • Many accessories included

The third generation of the Porsche 911, the Type 964, debuted in 1989 and featured for the first time Porsche’s Tiptronic automatic transmission. This era was also when the one-make series for the Porsche 911, the Carrera Cup and the Super Cup debuted, which opened the door to a wide range of users and laid the foundation for the modern era.

A number of limited edition and special models of the Type 964 were produced throughout its run. Among these was the Carrera RS, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991. There were a limited number of the RS model produced, believed to be 2,051 units. Of these, only 220 units were officially imported to Japan. The model was extremely popular in Japan, selling out immediately after its domestic release.

The body size of the 964RS is 4,250 x 1,660 x 1,270 mm (length x width x height). The 3,600 cc displacement, air-cooled horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine called the "M64/03 type" boasts a maximum output of 260 hp. Compared to the Type 964 Carrera 2, the ride height is 40 mm lower, and the engine has a maximum output of 250 hp. While not a huge change in height or increase in power compared to the Carrera 2, the weight reduction achieved is noteworthy. Compared to the Carrera 2's 1,350 kg, the 964 RS successfully removed 120 kg, weighing in at 1,230 kg (basic version). This was achieved through the omission of comfort equipment, the extensive use of aluminum, thinner glass used throughout, and even lighter magnesium wheels.

The Type 964 Carrera RS is to many the perfect 911. As with all Type 964s, it blends the best of old-school 911s with some modern features and the Carrera RS with its lower weight, NA air-cooled engine and rear-wheel drive, means it has everything to make it one of the most enjoyable 911s.

This particular example is a Mizwa-imported Type 964 Carrera RS. Originally the Type 964 manual transmission cars were 5-speed, however this car is fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The transmission number has been confirmed to match that of the chassis and engine, which are all verified as for an RS, so it is believed that the transmission case was left intact and converted to a 6-speed manual. The car is accompanied by a muffler, steering wheel, Sabelt harness, amongst others.

The exterior is finished in a stunning Midnight Blue pearl and the interior features a distinctive color-block leather seat. While there is some wear and tear on the interior, particularly on the driver's seat, the overall condition is very good for a car now 33 years old.
