Creating a “hardcore” version of supercars which is lighter and more high performance is now a staple for many manufacturers. What was once the domain of Porsche has now become a standard offering among the likes of Lamborghini and BMW. The 360 Challenge Stradale, introduced in 2003 was Ferrari’s first foray into this segment. This variant of the 360 Modena quickly gained popularity, selling out soon after its debut.

The V8 engine is the same as in the standard 360, however, it is fitted with an increased compression ratio, tuned to deliver a maximum output of 425 hp by redesigning the exhaust system and piston shape, polishing the intake manifold and reprogramming the ECU.

Adopting technology from the pinnacle of motorsport – Formula 1 – Ferrari’s engineers crafted suspension components, wheel bolts, and dampers from lightweight titanium alloys. Carbon fiber was used for the door panels, while the front and rear bumpers were produced using the ‘resin transfer moulding’ method, inspired by the track-oriented 360 Challenge. These and other weight-saving measures contributed to an overall weight reduction of 110 kg (242 lbs) compared to the 360 Modena.
Pushing performance further, Ferrari fitted the Challenge Stradale with high-spec carbon-ceramic brake discs derived from their flagship Enzo, enhancing brake performance and earning a reputation for having the best handling in its class. Aerodynamic upgrades such as a prominent front splitter, a vented rear engine hood, and a deeper diffuser increased downforce by 50%, solidifying its status as the ultimate 360.

The driving performance was also significantly improved as the Challenge Stradale could record 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.1 seconds, and its top speed became the first V8 Ferrari to breach the 300 km/h (186 mph) barrier. Additionally, it managed to shave 3.5 seconds off the lap record at the Pista di Fiorano.

This particular example is one of only 1,288 produced in Maranello. It has the iconic ‘Rosso Scuderia’ vermilion red paint, complemented by a ‘Nero’ black interior with a mix of leather and Alcantara. While some Challenge Stradale models opted for the tri-colore stripes of the Italian flag, this particular example has a more understated elegance, letting the sculpted bodywork and race- bred pedigree speak for itself.
