The VW Type 2 is a small van that was introduced in the 1950s for commercial purposes and was affectionately known as the “Wagen Bus” in Japan. Based on the chassis of the Type 1, commonly known as “the Beetle” and VW’s first mass produced car, it was manufactured with significantly strengthened components and a full cab-over one-box body.
In addition to its iconic design, it also has the basics of a commercial vehicle, including a comfortable ride with independent suspension, a simple and durable body, a low floor to make loading/unloading easy, and a highly durable air-cooled horizontally opposed 4-cylinder OHV engine. It had good performance for its time and quickly became popular around the world; both the Type 2 and Type 1’s popularity contributed to Volkswagen’s success in the 50s and 60s.
This Type 2 is a 1960 model with split windows, a feature of early versions. The odometer shows just 28,378 km. Although there is some age-related deterioration on the chrome around the headlights, both the interior and exterior are in remarkably good condition for a vehicle over 60 years old. Features such as the windscreen that can be opened/closed, removable desk, seats that can go fully flat, and refrigerator are still present.
The greatest feature is its Porsche 912 engine. While the driver feels the benefit of the increased engine power as soon as they start driving, handling retains the characteristics of a traditional Type 2.
