1932 MG J2 [K3 Magnette Conversion]
- Base model: 1932 MG J2
- Bodywork modeled after the 1934 MG K3 Magnette
- Racing-style aluminum hammered body finish
- Equipped with a Japanese-made supercharger unit
The MG J2 established the typical MG body style that would continue through to the T-series.
The J-series lineup consisted of the four-seater J1, the two-seater J2, the supercharged J3, and the pure racing model J4.
The J2, which serves as the base for this car, was produced in a total of 2,083 units between 1932 and 1934.
This particular vehicle is one of those 2,083 J2 units.
It was created by the founder of a certain car club in Kobe, who used the legendary MG model, the K3 Magnette, as a reference.
Although there are many converted models inspired by the K3 Magnette, of which only about 30 original units were produced, this car stands out with its boldly hand-formed aluminum body left in bare metal, a dramatic pointed tail design, and a fishtail exhaust, all combining to create a striking presence. These elements reflect the creator’s refined sense of design and aesthetics.
Later, it was owned by a member of another car club based in Nagoya who kept the car unregistered. However, it was not in drivable condition and was eventually sold to a classic car specialty shop in Osaka.
There, a mechanical overhaul centered on the cylinder head was carried out, and the previously unsuccessful installation of a Japanese-made supercharger unit was successfully completed. The vehicle has since been registered and passed inspection.
While the driving feel remains that of a classic pre-war MG, its low center of gravity and lightweight body allow for surprisingly nimble and responsive handling, especially on winding roads. For enthusiasts who enjoy hands-on maintenance, such as replacing spark plugs themselves, this car offers a unique presence and an irreplaceable sense of enjoyment.
